The Caribbean Region continues to face ongoing threats of mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and malaria which impact our everyday lives. The Caribbean Mosquito Awareness Week, held yearly since 2016, is vital to addressing this issue by ensuring that the public is informed and empowered to make a difference.
From May 12th to 16th, the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) will once again stand united with the Caribbean people and dedicate this week to bring about awareness and solutions to mosquito-borne diseases.
In the past year, our communities have faced daunting challenges with dengue outbreaks in several member states. Over 2,000 suspected and 1,200 laboratory confirmed cases were reported to CARPHA from 13 Member States. This represents a 16% increase in dengue cases compared to 2024. In the first quarter of 2025, there have already been cases of dengue and malaria. Many of these cases would have led to hospitalization. Additionally, we note the threat of both ongoing as well as re-emerging viruses like Oropouche virus and commit to continue supporting our member states with training, resources and capacity building initiatives....
